Keep Your Collections Humidity Free
Your collection is your passion! You’ve spent thousands of hours, and who knows how many dollars to track down each individual item. Don’t let dampness or moisture ruin your investment or your enjoyment!
Consider the location where you store your collection, and make sure the relative humidity and temperature are right for your items.
Relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the amount of water vapor the air can hold at a given temperature. If the relative humidity is too high, conditions are right for the growth of mold and fungus, and the lifespan of paper products is shortened. Metal objects are at risk of corrosion or rusting. If the relative humidity is too low, paper items can become brittle.
For most mixed collections, a temperature of 65 to 70 degrees is best for storage, with the relative humidity in the area of 35 to 50%. Inexpensive devices called hygrometers are readily available to test your air’s humidity level. Once done, if you find your humidity level is too high – or if you live in a very warm and tropical climate, you may want to invest in a dehumidifier.
Collections that can benefit from proper humidity control include:
- Any paper or ephemera
- Sports collections: cards, baseballs, clothing
- Musical instruments
- Dolls and their clothing
- Paper money
- Comic books
- Buttons and badges
- Flatware and other metal items
- And more…
Dampness and moisture are insidious problems. Collections stored in lower levels or out of the way locations may be subject to damage from even low levels of moisture that may be difficult to detect. Once you can smell the problem, the damage may already be done.
